* Tek-Tools releases Profiler for VMware; Sun acquires Innotek, vendor of the open source VirtualBox
Everything’s coming up virtualized. Tek-Tools Software and Sun are the latest storage vendors to take advantage of IT’s rush to virtualize every physical box in their network infrastructure. Tek-Tools announced a virtualization module for its Profiler Suite, while Sun acquired desktop virtualization provider Innotek.
Called Profiler for VMware, Tek-Tools’ newest module allows end-to-end monitoring of VMware ESX host computers, virtual machines and the storage attached to them. Profiler for VMware is agentless and allows for reporting with either pre-packaged or custom reports. The module also allows users to identify over-allocated storage and reclaim it. Users can identify and eliminate unused storage hardware, and capture performance data on ESX servers.
Profiler for VMware provides users visibility for capacity planning, virtualization planning, performance monitoring and availability monitoring. It is available now for $995 for each physical server.
Sun upped its ante into virtualization by acquiring Innotek, a vendor of desktop virtualization tools. The company will add Innotek’s open source VirtualBox software to its Sun xVM platform.
Innotek claims that more than 4 million people have downloaded VirtualBox since it became available in January 2007. VirtualBox lets desktops or laptops running Windows, Linux, Mac or Solaris to run different operating systems side-by-side, letting users switch between them at a click of the mouse.
The acquisition will not be of so much benefit to IT professionals, but could be useful to software developers who are building cross-platform applications.
