* Deduper intros box for remote office
Deduplication vendor Data Domain last week extended its appliances into the low-end of the market by introducing a system for use in remote or branch offices. The DD120 is an alternative for businesses who would normally put a tape autoloader in the hands of an inexperienced or over-taxed administrator.
The appliance allows enterprises to back up and protect data in remote or branch offices and deduplicate it in the process. An inline appliance that deduplicates data at up to 150GB per hour it is capable of storing as much as 18TB of logical, deduplicated data in a 1U high chassis. The DD120 has a raw capacity of 750GB.
Included with the DD120 is software that allows replication of data between the data center and the remote office. Called Data Domain Replicator, the software allows the consolidation of backups. (Compare Data Backup and Replication products)
The DD120 is integrated with backup applications as a Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Unix/Linux Network File System (NFS) file server or by using Symantec’s new Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) interface. It works with backup systems from Symantec, EMC, HP Data Protector, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, CommVault, CA, Atempo and BakBone.
The appliance works with all of Data Domain’s other appliances, including the DDX Array Series. As many as 320 remote sites can vault data to the DDX array.
According to Data Domain’s claims, its deduplication and replication technology can improve network bandwidth by as much as 99%.
The DD120 starts at $12,500.
