* Hifin releases DR 250 and DR 255
If you’ve been concerned about the performance impact deduplication exacts on your network, Hifn may just have the product you’ve been thinking about. The company’s recently released DR 250 and DR 255 acceleration adapters work with Sepaton, Quantum, EMC, Network Appliance, Sun, HP and FalconStor virtual tape libraries and can increase performance by as much as 10-times.
The DR 250 is a PCI-X 64-bit adapter that uses LZS stateful and stateless encryption as well as AES, Triple-DES and ARC4 encryption algorithms. It supports RSA, DH and DSA public key algorithms. As many as four adapters can be added per system, where they provide load-balancing support. The DR 250 comes with Windows and Linux drivers.
The DR 255, a PCIe four-lane adapters, also uses LZS stateful and stateless encryption and compression. Like the DR 250, it too comes with Windows and Linux drivers and supports load balancing.
The performance acceleration comes via an onboard ASIC. Hifn claims that most vendors rely on software rather than hardware compression, and larger compression ratios.
Hifn’s compression and encryption occurs in a single pass. The DR 250 and DR 255 can compress data from 1.5 to 10x, thus resulting in a lower storage cost. They offload intensive functions from the CPU, thereby exacting no performance penalties. Further the anti-expansion capabilities allow the adapters to detect incompressible data and prevent size increases.
The DR 250 and DR 255 are available for $1,195.
