* Quantum file server management environment
Quantum this week announced software that not only manages file server environments, but de-duplicates data and allows for the dynamic allocation of resources.
Quantum, which acquired ADIC last May, inherited ADIC’s storage management product StorNext along with its tape automation products. StorNext is the hidden gem of ADIC’s products, according to Quantum’s product marketing manager Nathan Moffitt.
This version of StorNext adds a distributed LAN client that monitors the file servers and network-attached storage devices on the network. StorNext has until now been focused on storage-area network management.
The product also incorporates the de-duplication technology ADIC acquired with its acquisition of Rocksoft. Quantum is using this feature as a secondary tier of storage for long-term retention. Its de-duplication is done by post-processing rather than in-line.
The software also allows customers to dynamically allocate resources for migration purposes. With StorNext, customers can shift storage from one device to another without disruption when they want to perform maintenance on an array.
Quantum’s StorNext competes with SAN file systems from SGI, Sun and IBM and with clustered file systems from IBRIX and Isilon.
StorNext is expected to ship this quarter.
