Data Domain announced this week virtual tape library options for its series of disk-based backup appliances.

The company added virtual tape library emulation to its DD400 Enterprise Series Data Domain Restorers. The VTL allows emulation of as many as 47 Linear Tape Open drives and as many as 100,000 cartridges. It supports either 1G or 2Gbps Fibre Channel links.

Data Domains software reduces the amount of data being saved by using compression methods, which only save those parts of files that have not been saved before. The VTL option is available to connect Fibre Channel storage-area network environments.

Data Domain VTL (DD VTL) also supports the Data Domain Replicator so compressed virtual tape images can be automatically copied across the WAN to a disaster recovery site.

The DD400 Enterprise Series allows users to store as much as 200T bytes of data capacity in a 3U rack-mount appliance. It works with Symantec’s Veritas NetBackup and Backup Exec and EMC’s Legato Networker, and products from IBM, Oracle, HP and CommVault.

The DD VTL option is available starting at $4,000 for a DD410 VTL.
