PlateSpin recently rolled out a software module for its application virtualization product that automatically analyzes server resources and application workloads and recommends the optimal fit for those virtualized servers.
The Consolidation Planning Module for PlateSpin PowerRecon is an analysis engine that determines the optimal fit between workloads and servers. It takes the hardware, software and performance data gathered by PowerRecon and recommends how servers should be allocated to best achieve the expected workload results. The Consolidation Planning Module works with VMware’s ESX Server, VMware Server or Microsoft Virtual Server.
Analysts attest to the value of the Consolidation Planning Module.

The module uses the CPU, disk, network and memory statistics it gathers to determine the proper distribution of servers to a set of virtual hosts. IT administrators can easily determine where to consolidate servers to minimize hardware, while still maintaining maximum application performance.
The Consolidation Planning Module looks at CPU, disk, memory, network and time across multiple servers concurrently. It includes templates that let users input the characteristics of their preferred virtual server configurations. The module models host servers and the allocation of virtual machines to those host. It supports virtual machine environments on both Windows and Linux servers.
