Start-up refreshes virtualization technology

Start-up Meiosys last week announced virtualization technology that lets enterprise companies freeze applications and move them to another server.

MetaCluster UC 3.0 runs between the operating system and an application, letting IT dynamically relocate applications from one physical or virtual server to another.

The company has enhanced MetaCluster to include more resource support for applications and a management layer. The software maintains application state and connections during operations. It containerizes applications, allowing IT to isolate one running application from another. With MetaCluster, IT managers can define rules for how applications will be relocated.

Meiosys claims that traditional server virtualization products impose a 10% to 30% performance overhead and are thus more suitable for development rather than production environments. The company also claims that the performance of applications that run alongside MetaCluster is only affected by 1%.

With MetaCluster, IT can optimize utilization of server resources – if utilization is too high on one machine, a portion of its applications can be moved to another. Relocation of applications is transparent to the user since state is maintained.

Version 3.0 includes the ability to checkpoint and restart multiprocess, multithreaded and MPI applications. It works in J2EE and non-J2EE environments.

MetaCluster UC 3.0 runs on AMD and Intel 32- and 64-bit processors using Linux. Meiosys will also release a Solaris 8/Sparc product in the first quarter, and plans to support Solaris 10 in the future.

Founded in 2001, Meiosys is funded by Alven Capital, BayTech Venture Capital, Crédit Lyonnais Private Equity, Cisco, Partech International, Siparex and Wellington Partners. It has received $7.5 million.

The company sells MetaCluster through OEMs such as Sun, so pricing is not immediately available.
