Verari Systems last week rolled out an eight-way AMD Opteron-based symmetrical multiprocessing server to be used by high-performance, transaction-based computing users.
The Octet 8-Way uses AMD64 technology with the Direct Connect Architecture that allows symmetrical multiprocessing on the x86 platform. The Octet 8-Way supports as many as eight Opteron 800 Series processors, 64G bytes of memory and as many as eight Serial ATA (SATA) drives.
AMD introduced the 800 Series processor in June 2003, when it was used primarily in four-way servers. The 800 Series processor deploys HyperTransport technology for faster processing; it can provide as much as 6.4G bit/sec of bandwidth between processors, memory, I/O systems and other chipsets.
Verari uses the HyperTransport features to fuel memory performance, improve SMP linearity and provide lower-latency I/O.
The Octet 8-Way’s 64G bytes of RAM could be used for applications such as electronic design automation.
The Octet 8-Way server is expected to be available in December, starting at $23,000.
Verari Systems was formerly known as RackSaver. The company claims its products are used by Industrial Light and Magic, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, NASA, Northrop Grumman and Shell, among others.
In other news, the company last week partnered with Cluster File Systems, the maker of the Lustre shared file system. The two companies have developed a package for Verari’s BladeRack blade servers and Verari Systems family of Fibre Channel-attached arrays.
