* Procket CEO exits personally; also, MCI fixes its wireless wagon to Nextel

Procket Networks, the intriguing start-up founded by routing software and programmable processor standouts, is out one CEO. Randall Kruep recently resigned for “personal reasons,” according to official companyspeak. But well-placed sources say he had a falling out with founder and Chief Scientist Tony Li, who has a reputation for rocking boats as well as routing smarts. Procket has appointed one of its investors to stand in while it seeks a new Li-ontamer. http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2003/0627procketceo.html

MCI has found a buyer for the fixed wireless assets it’s been looking to offload for the better part of a year: Nextel. Nextel is forking over $144 million as the top bidder for MCI’s fixed wireless network and spectrum, which were auctioned off while MCI was in bankruptcy proceedings as its former WorldCom self. MCI didn’t get nearly the return on its investment though – the carrier obtained its fixed wireless wares by spending $400 million on CAI Wireless in 1999. Yet Nextel’s bid was more than double the offer from BellSouth.

Juniper has fortified its edge offerings in an effort to create revenue for its carrier customers – and itself. The “Service Built Edge” initiative includes a new edge router for low-density broadband aggregation sites, an Ethernet services interface, and virtual private LAN service and accounting software. Juniper’s proposing that carriers adopt new broadband aggregation business models in order to generate revenue beyond commodity Internet access services.
