Nextel is forking over $144 million as the top bidder for MCI’s fixed wireless network and spectrum, which were auctioned off while MCI was in bankruptcy proceedings as its former WorldCom self. MCI didn’t get nearly the return on its investment though – the carrier obtained its fixed wireless wares by spending $400 million on CAI Wireless in 1999.
