Level 3 purchased Telverse Communications, a start-up that developed IP-based voice and data services. Level 3 has renamed Telverse’s Business Tone Service – now (3)Tone – and plans to offer it as a PBX, IP PBX and Centrex replacement service through channel partners. Ciena is at it again. The optical transport and switching vendor made its fifth investment in a smaller player targeting a growth market last week when it put some skin into Luminois Networks. Luminous makes optical multiservice transport systems for the metro market that support Ethernet, TDM voice, video and wavelength services.

Ciena was a lead investor in Luminous’ $25 million Series E round. In an effort to broaden its market presence and penetration, Ciena has either acquired or invested in ONI Systems (metro optical), WaveSmith Networks (multiservice edge switching), Equipe Communications (multiservice core switching), Laurel Networks (edge routing) and now Luminous. Analysts believe Ciena and others will also move into the broadband access market by acquiring or investing in a fiber and/or DSL equipment maker, such as a passive optical network vendor.
