SQL Server 2008 Installation Strategies and Best Practices

Part 1 of 5

Microsoft has announced that most likely SQL Server 2008 will be released to manufacturing by the end of September.   With that being said, more and more organizations will start evaluating SQL Server 2008 implementation strategies.  Over the course of the next few blogs I plan on sharing some best practices and strategies gained from writing my new book, SQL Server 2008 Management and Administration,  and working with the product for the past few years.  The SQL Server 2008 Installation Strategies and Best Practices will specifically focus on:

-Part 1: Introduction?

-Part 2: New Installation, Upgrade or Transition?

-Part 3: Choosing the Appropriate Edition of SQL Server 2008?

-Part 4: Determine which SQL Server 2008 Features to Install?

-Part 5: Which Operating System Should be Selected?

So let’s get reacquainted before I start the series.  My name is Ross Mistry, and I have been invited back as an author expert to blog about my experiences.  I am a partner and principal consultant with Convergent Computing (CCO).  CCO is Microsoft Gold Partner focusing on designing and implementing Microsoft Infrastructure solutions for Fortune 500 organizations.

I am also an author with SAMS publishing and my latest titles I have co-authored include; Windows Server 2008 Unleashed, SQL Server 2008 Management and Administration.  In the past few years I have also been involved with Exchange Server 2007 Unleashed, SharePoint Server 2007 Unleashed, SQL Server 2005 Unleashed, ISA Server 2004 Unleashed, and SQL Server 2005 Changing the Paradigm.

When I am not consulting, writing white papers or working on books, I frequently speak at Microsoft conferences.  I have recently spoken at the SQL Server PASS Community Summit in North America, SQL Server PASS Community Summit in Europe, SQL Server DevConnections in Orlando and the Microsoft campus in San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

I am currently working on my latest title; SQL Server 2008 Management and Administration which is coming out this fall.  The book can be preordered on amazon.com.

Enjoy the series and check back shortly!!!

Cheers
