Unless you were locked in the server room all week, you would know that Cisco held its annual Networkers bash in Anaheim, Calif. Gyrating dancers and rollerbladers warmed up the audience for John Chambers’ keynote, and rockersKISS played at the afterparty. Oh, and some products were announced and tacky bags were handed out too.
Cisco wants to be in your data center
Never one to just blend into the IT wallpaper, Cisco not only wants to be the leader in Web 2.0 technologies, it also wants to own the data center. Cisco at Networkers detailed its two-year strategy for its so-called Data Center 3.0, which focuses on virtualization and automation. But how does Data Center 3.0 differ from the new data center strategies of IBM, HP, et al? Boosting Cisco’s data center message was the raft of data center products released at Networkers, and on Friday, details of a $150 million investment in VMware.
Bye-bye Linksys
Chambers told a group of European journalists that the Linksys name will be replaced by Cisco’s. Cisco Subnet’s Channelguy thinks this decision, which has huge repercussions to Cisco’s SMB strategy, will not be that easy to carry out.
Fixing Duke’s problems
Back in the server room, Cisco finally released a fix to its wireless network gear problem that caused the wireless LAN at Duke University to flood after being triggered by a couple of iPhones.
