Google really does have designs on the moon

Joking, I was joking … or at least I thought so at the time this morning when I suggested that the founders of Google, having snagged a NASA airstrip near company headquarters, might be starting a space-related buying spree that would lead inevitably to the mother of all “shoot for” goals: the moon.

The Economist is reporting:

As The Economist went to press on September 13th, the X Prize Foundation and Google were due to announce a new international competition to put an unmanned rover on the moon within five years. The Internet giant is putting up $30 million to sponsor the prize – with lunar videos to be featured on the firm’s YouTube site.

Sure, first an unmanned rover … then a lunar Google colony. All part of the plan for total intergalactic domination.

(Update: More details about the competition here.)
