Gore joining venture firm Kleiner Perkins

Perhaps this will finally put an end the White House run speculation.

Former vice president and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore will soon be putting other people’s money where his mouth is as he joins Silicon Valley’s best-known venture capital fund to boost green technologies.

From the Associated Press:

Gore, an environmental activist who won an Academy Award for his global warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” joins Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as it and dozens of other venture firms headquartered in Silicon Valley expand beyond software, computer hardware, the Internet and biotechnology to so-called “clean-tech” investments worldwide.

Gore is expected to be a high-profile, active partner at Kleiner Perkins. He’s already a senior adviser to Google Inc. and a member of the board at Apple Inc. Alliance for Climate Protection, the advocacy group he co-founded, is based in Palo Alto.

Kleiner Perkins is also teaming with Generation Investment Management of London to invest collaboratively “to find, fund and accelerate green business, technology and policy solutions with the greatest potential to help solve the current climate crisis.”

Gore is quoted in the Kleiner Perkins press release: “This alliance brings together world-class business talent to focus on solving the climate crisis. Together, we have a working understanding of this urgent, multi-dimensional challenge and are resolved to help business and government leaders accelerate the development of sustainable solutions.”

The field seemingly couldn’t be any hotter, what with private industry, government agencies and academic institutions racing to out-do one another in terms of changing their environmental practices – driven primarily by a desire to save money, of course.

Gore’s involvement on the investment level will only serve to turn up the heat even more.
