The snow is piling up at about an inch an hour – they say we could get a foot – and I’m home today doing my best to work while three 6-year-olds enjoy another unscheduled day off from school.
So it warms me no end to learn that this day is an aberration, according to climate researchers, who say the Northeast is more than doing its part for global warming.
From the Associated Press:
A study of weather station data from across the Northeast from 1965 through 2005 found December-March temperatures increased by 2.5 degrees. Snowfall totals dropped by an average of 8.8 inches across the region over the same period, and the number of days with at least 1 inch of snow on the ground decreased by nine days on average.
“Winter is warming greater than any other season,” said Elizabeth Burakowski, who analyzed data from dozens of stations for her master’s thesis in collaboration with Cameron Wake, a professor at the University of New Hampshire’s Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space.
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not suggesting that the researchers are wrong, merely that the timing of the report is out of synch with what’s happening outside. After all, it was 60 degrees here just the other day and, yes, that was thunder rumbling throughout a good portion of the day. Not typical January weather in New England.
