Jonathan Klay, a Gearhead reader, sent me a note yesterday in which he relates this curious tale:
I logged in yesterday morning, and a little window popped up saying winlogin had an error. OK, Windows gets errors, no big deal – so I clicked yes to report it to MS, then clicked on the details link on the error reporting window. So then, a MS web page pops up saying “Virus alert: Windows detected the Winlogon Trojan/Worm virus on your computer” [here is the page in question]. OK, a trojan/worm virus – what, three in one? The link on that page goes to Windows Live OneCare and it’s apparently a ruse to try and get you to purchase OneCare. This is so less than helpful in todays world.
This could be be a simple goof on the part of Microsoft or the tip of a PR nightmare iceberg. Jonathan found a thread from someone who had a similar experience in the Microsoft OneCare forum that stumped the moderator so it appears that Jonathan is not alone. Any idea what’s going on here? Anyone?
