SMB Linux is a chimera

Earlier on today, I posted about the Office-less office.

Now I have to continue with the chimera that is Linux for SMBs!

Yes, some yobs are advocating that small businesses yank out their current server OS and install one of the new Linux offerings.

Any small business owner that entrusts his/her computing service to a Linux SMB solution is, IMO, either no longer interested in whatever business that small business is currently in, and would like to start a career in Linux hell, or is plain crazy.

Especially if the decision is made on the premise and promise of free, that subdulous mantra constantly used by Linux fanboi to gain entry into the presence of otherwise sane business owners.

If you do not have a member of staff well versed in Linux, why, pray tell, are you even thinking of taking the plunge?

Furthermore, if Linux is so free, the pertinent question that should be asked by the business owner is, “What is in it for you?”

Allowing us to segue to that hidden word in the world of open source, services.

Yes, S-E-R-V-I-C-E-S!

That intrinsic component of open source that never gets mentioned when costs are being discussed.

Leastways, not initially.

After the contract is signed, or the Linux infrastructure is in place, then comes the services head butt.

People, don’t fall for it.

A Microsoft Windows Small Business Server-based SMB infrastructure will do all and more. For less than the cost of a Linux solution. In addition, you have the added benefit of Microsoft standing behind the product.

Isn’t Windows Server 2003 SBS R2 the way to go? I know I am right, but if you think not, help me understand here or at john.obeto@absolutevista.com.
