TDG Research reports that 80% of podcasts are not actually played on a mobile decice (i.e. an iPod), but rather listened to on a PC or just plain deleted. It’s an interesting theory. Until I got my iPod, I listened to podcasts exclusively on my desktop by manually downloading them and setting up on-the-fly playlists of the shows I wanted to listen to. Even now, I still listen to a few on the PC rather than the iPod. The authors of the report claim that their data means the name “podcast” is not the right moniker for the technology and it should be changed. I am not sure if we need to do that since the name is pretty well entrenched at this point. It’s even in the Oxford dictionary!
