Computerized shopping carts will soon be heading to a grocery store near you.
IBM’s “Shopping Buddy” is a small touch-screen computer mounted on the cart’s handle. You can type in an item, find out where it is in the store (via the device’s GPS) and follow a map to get there, order goods at the deli without standing in line, transfer your shopping list from your home computer to the device, and play Minesweeper while you wait in the checkout line. OK, the last one’s not true, but it would be cool.
Now the Shopping Buddy sounds all well and good, but frankly, we’re just happy to get a cart where all the wheels work.
