The partnership is designed to help enterprises derisk mainframe modernizations, the companies said.
Google Cloud has partnered with database and mainframe modernization software provider mLogica to help enterprises modernize their mainframe applications.
The partnership will see Google Cloud combine its Dual Run service with mLogica’s LIBER*M automated code refactoring platform.
While LIBER*M provides automated assessment, code analysis, dependency mapping, and code transformation capabilities for multiple languages, Dual Run enables the simultaneous operation of mainframe and cloud applications in parallel. This allows enterprises to compare and validate refactored applications before completely shifting to the cloud.
Dual Run’s support for running applications across both mainframes and the cloud is crucial as it helps enterprises move mainframe applications without shutting them down for a time period.
Most mainframe applications are tightly tied to their data and enterprises typically need to stop these applications for a certain time when moving to the cloud.
Dual Run’s approach helps accelerate modernization while also minimizing costs and reducing risks, the company said.
Other than the partnership with mLogica, Google Cloud also offers a variety of other mainframe migration tools, including Radis and G4 that can be employed to modernize specific applications.
Enterprises can also use a combination of migration tools to modernize their mainframe applications.
Some of these tools include the Gemini-powered Mainframe Assessment Tool (MAT), Mainframe Code Rewrite, Mainframe Refactor for Batch, Mainframe Application Replatforming, and the Mainframe Connector.
IBM, too, offers mainframe modernization services and code transformation services via its generative AI service watsonx.
IBM spin-off Kyndryl also offers a similar service in partnership with Microsoft. As part of the partnership, the companies combine Kyndryl’s zCloud mainframe service with Microsoft’s Power Platform. Kyndryl has also partnered with AWS to offer mainframe modernization as a service.
