One key driver for desktop virtualization is the desire to reduce power consumption as part of a green strategy. Today most companies buy Energy-Star compliant PCs, but even those PCs use more power than thin-client terminals. Only about 27% of organizations are using or planning to use desktop power management, but we expect this trend to grow as companies move first to virtualized desktops, and then to thin client. Again UC architects must be involved in thin client strategies to ensure that thin-client plans don’t prohibit the use of desktop voice and/or video applications.
