Eight of nine patches focused on OS

Admins better make the morning coffee strong and black this coming Tuesday. Microsoft has nine security bulletins –  five of them critical – set to come out next week.

Nearly all of the affected software related to the critical fixes, which allow remote code execution, center on Windows. As is the custom, Microsoft does not provide any details until Patch Tuesday, which comes Aug. 11.

The other four patches, all rated important, also affect Windows.

The affected Windows versions are Windows 2000 (client/server), XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008 (some affect server core).

The one critical patch not linked to Windows affects Office, Visual Studio, ISA Server and BizTalk Sever.

By the end of Tuesday, the Windows vulnerability list could be Microsoft’s best advertising for a move to Windows 7.
