NetApp this week announced its entry into cloud storage with the introduction of its Data ONTAP 8 operating system. The company defines cloud computing as ‘IT as a service’ and says that by deploying NetApp gear and software, customers are able to create cloud computing environments.

NetApp announces CEO switch

NetApp’s new Data ONTAP 8, which combines Data ONTAP 7G and Data ONTAP GX, offers secure multi-tenancy, transparent data motion, service automation, storage efficiency and integrated data protection as part of its cloud offering.

Using a technology call MultiStore, customers can deploy a shared infrastructure for separate user groups or customers. Customers can provide access to data during shutdowns or upgrades within a single site or across a distributed environment. They can also use a set of role-based management and monitoring tools to meter usage and allow chargeback for use of resources. With integrated backup and data recovery, customers can protect their environments.

In addition, NetApp announced several new cloud-friendly features, which include NetApp Data Motion and Dynamic Data Center. NetApp data motion lets customers move data non-disruptively across storage systems. NetApp Dynamic Data Center has three components that let customers adopt IT as a service: a service oriented infrastructure that uses NetApp gear; a service management framework to help manage infrastructure; and a professional services organization to support IT as a service implementations.

In addition, NetApp introduced this week a new Serial Attached SCSI/Serial ATA disk shelf that supports as much as 24TB in a 4U form factor, and a new version of its Performance Acceleration Module that uses solid state disks to improve performance.
