* TCP-App measures app server performance for variety of business activities
The Transaction Performance Council has released a new benchmark that Jerry Buggert of Unisys finds important.
Buggert, engineering director of systems analysis, modeling and measurement for Unisys, says Web business-to-business applications have created the need for the benchmark.
“Applications, technologies and standards have evolved that dictate how people work over the Web between businesses,” Buggert says. “They weren’t there a few years ago. There’s also a great deal of interest in looking at Java-based performance vs. .Net performance in comparable environments. The new benchmark focuses on the application server.” Buggert is involved in the TPC and is a former chairman of the council.
The benchmark Buggert is talking about is TPC-App, which simulates business-to-business Web services workloads and retail e-commerce interactions.
TPC-App simulates a variety of business activities and measures them in interactions processed per second.
Like other TPC benchmarks, TPC-App includes price and performance information. It is also vendor-neutral.
The TPC has two other active benchmarks – TPC-C for online transaction processing and TPC-H for decision support and ad hoc queries.
So far, the TPC has published no TPC-App benchmarks. But maybe we’ll see at least one vendor – Buggert’s employer – letting some numbers out of the bag.
