I just switched my AV software to Avira’s AntiVir Personal Edition Classic. I ran a scan immediately after installing it, and it alerted on c:winntbrowser.exe, claiming I had a trojan. My old software hadn’t been complaining, so naturally I wanted a third opinion. Enter Virustotal . Virustotal offers a free service for scanning suspicious files using several antivirus engines. It was just given a Best Product of 2007 award by PC World. Visit their website, use the ‘browse’ button in the upper right corner of the page to select the suspicious file on your PC, and upload it. You may alternately email the file to them and they will email a report back to you. Out of the 31 products they used to scan my file, 11 of them found it infected and 1 found it “suspicious”. Avira, Fortinet and Webwasher-Gateway all think it’s infected by Pahador. S’cuse me, but I’ve got some killin’ to do…
