PC Magazine this week has a crack at explaining consumer voip and the challenges that standalone companies such as the buried SunRocket and the struggling Vonage. The argument is that with bundling the cable cos have a distinct advantage:
Take Comcast, for example. The cable giant added 670,000 CDV customers during the second quarter for a total of more than three million, according to quarterly earnings released late last month. In the last year alone, the company added 2.2 million CDV users. The CDV service is available to 79 percent of Comcast’s total footprint and 8 percent of that total have taken advantage of the service.
It is true that Comcast has done a good job with it’s quad play and that other than 8×8 the others are struggling. There is however a group of voip providers that are doing some really good business and they are business voip providers such as STS and Cbeyond.
