Former Atheros CEO Rich Redelfs, now a venture capitalist at Foundation Capital, spoke with me recently about his experiences scooping up technologies from universities that can be used to fuel network start-ups. On the subject of dealing with professors who may or may not be open to commercializing their tech “babies”:
“What the consumer wants or what’s viable in the marketplace may not be pushing the envelope on the technology,” he says. “And some academics feel that is their role… not to be constrained by the marketplace but only by what the imagination can dream up.”
