My good friend Jim Sterne publishes a (usually) monthly summary of his world which he titles “Sterne Measures”. In the latest issue he recounts the following tale …

My Creepiest Customer Service Call ==================================

“What are you wearing?”

When I’ve been on the road for days and days and I hear that on the phone from my wife, it makes me smile. But on a tech support call – it’s creepy.

My Vaio’s mousepad was acting up and I called Sony to sort it out. We walked through a reboot, downloading a new driver and reconfiguring half a dozen settings. Then he (yes, he) popped the question: “What are you wearing?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Are you wearing a shirt?”

“Uh… yeah….”

“Are you wearing an undershirt?”

“Uhm – right – listen…”

“I want you to take off your shirt.”

“Look, I’m flattered and all that, but…”

[Laughs] “Usually I don’t get that far and usually it only happens to women because they wear so many layers – but your problem is due to static electricity.”

“No shirt?”

So – alone in my hotel room – only feeling slightly dorky – I disrobed.

“Better?”

“No.”

“Hmmm – then pick your laptop up off the desk and put it on your lap.”

“Uhhh….”

“Just try it.”

Worked like a charm. I’m still shaking my head in disbelief. [If you want to subscribe to Jim’s newsletter, here’s where you need to go.]
