The purchase of Bycast and its StorageGRID software may put NetApp at odds with Bycast's OEM partners HP, Iron Mountain and IBM. While IBM's relationship wit NetApp will likely be unaffected because IBM already OEMs NetApp filers, and will change little for Iron Mountains, its relationship with HP may be strained because HP already has its own storage hardware. Time will tell, NetApp says.

Bycast's StorageGRID technology has been most used in medical archive solutions offered by HP, IBM and Iron Mountain.

NetApp plans to use Bycast to manage petabyte-scale, globally distributed repositories of images, video, and records for enterprises and service providers.

Bycast's software supports CIFS, NFS and HTTP. The company, based in Vancouver, claims more than 250 customers, including Iowa Health Systems. The company is 10 years old and privately held.
