Veeam adds instant recovery of virtual machines; Arkeia adds deduplication
Veeam Software, a company that provides data backup and recovery software for virtualized server environments, last week announced that it has enhanced its Veeam Backup & Replication software.
Survey reveals cost of data recovery
The new version of Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0 adds the ability to instantly recover a virtual machine without disruption, the ability to recover individual items from any application running in a virtual machine and the ability to verify the recoverability of a virtual machine. In addition, Veeam has added the ability for IT administrators to create test virtual machines, which they can use to troubleshoot problems, test software patches and new applications. Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0 also allows administrators to recover entire virtual machines or individual files from the same image-level backup.
Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0 is priced by the server socket starting at $599.
Arkeia Software also introduced Arkeia Network Backup Version 9.0, which adds what it calls progressive deduplication technology that is source-based, inline and content-aware. The company acquired the deduplication functionality with its acquisition of Kadena Systems in 2009. The new version also includes encryption capability and support for Ubuntu 10.10, OpenBSD 4.8, Red Hat Fedora 14, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, and Debian 6.
Arkeia’s progressive deduplication determines if data is a probable match to blocks in a known-block-pool. Probable matches are run through a heavy-weight hash algorithm to deduplicate them. The technology uses variable block deduplication which can be sized by file type.
Arkeia Network Backup v9.0 is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2011 with progressive deduplication for Linux and Windows platforms. The Arkeia Deduplication Option is priced at $2,000 per media server.
