Acquisition gives it it's own intellectual property
It’s about time is all that can be said about Emulex’s acquisition of ServerEngines, the property holder of its Fibre Channel over Ethernet intellectual property.

On Monday, Emulex announced that the company had acquired ServerEngines for approximately $225 million. ServerEngines has provided the FCoE capability for Emulex’s unified converged network adapters in contrast to QLogic, who uses property of it’s own for it single-chip converged network adapters.
Both companies have led in FCoE adoption, thready as it has been as users struggle to deal with the complexity of converging their Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks. Convergence of networks is slow – fraught with decisions of whether to throw out Fibre Channel wholesale or to adopt a graduated approach to converged networking with top of the rack switches and FCoE-enabled host bus adapters when server refreshes take place.
The acquisition also gives Emulex control of the ServerEngine’s Pilot family of Server Management Controllers, which reside on the motherboard and enable remote IP based “lights out” management capabilities including Baseboard Management Control, Graphics and KVM-Over-IP for server platforms. Pilot ASICs are currently being used by Cisco, HP, NEC and Unisys.
