NEC recently inked a deal to integrate Varaha’s mobile UC platform with NEC’s own UNIVERGE SV8000 IP-PBX. This enables NEC customers to extend telephony functionality such as single number reach, extension presence awareness, unified messaging, and integrated call data records to smartphone users. This announcement serves to reinforce a point I made previously NOTE TO POSTER: PLEAES LINK THIS URL TO THE WORDS HIGHLIGHTED. (http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/57806), extending UC to the mobile device is rising in importance as workers increasingly rely on iPhones and BlackBerrys to communicate, as the capabilities of those devices to support UC clients improves. Our 2009 data showed that the number of mobile devices supported by enterprise IT would rise by 421% over the next few years, meaning that mobility must be a key component of your UC plan. Not only does extending UC to mobile devices make sense from a user perspective, it also provides the opportunity to reduce wireless costs by moving calls from cellular per-minute services to the enterprise wireless LAN.
