Where's Microsoft going? Bob Muglia's keynote at MMS, April 20, 2010
Seven years ago, Microsoft announced their Dynamic System Initiative, DSI for short. DSI, a 10-year vision, encompasses using models as the basis for application development and operations management. Microsoft envisioned implementation through Visual Studio and Operations Manager (then known as MOM) management packs.
In 2008, Bob’s MMS keynote focused on the Dynamic Datacenter (see http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/27354 for details). Then five years into the 10-year vision, the Dynamic Datacenter encompasses the dynamic (adaptive) stage of the Infrastructure Model.
Now we are seven years into the 10-year DSI journey, with Visual Studio 2010 and Opalis integration in the System Center suite taking us further along the model-driven path.
The beauty of models is they are platform and application independent. Applications use models as building blocks. This concept can also be extended to virtualization where you can use models for your various server roles.
This dovetails into Microsoft’s next initiative – cloud computing. Using System Center components such as Virtual Machine Manager, Operations Manager, Service Manager, and App-V, we can have complete application and server independence regardless of the platform – and whether it be in the cloud or on bare metal.
To answer the question of where Microsoft is going, they’re continuing on the DSI vision and incorporating cloud computing using the building blocks of DSI. Look to seeing product announcements going forward moving in that direction.
