The ever-increasing risk of sensitive data loss
As network borders dissolve, the distinction between inside the firewall and outside the firewall becomes less clear. One challenge is an ever-increasing risk of sensitive data loss, driving high interest in Data Leak Prevention (DLP). Sensitive data means different things to different people: About 30% of participants in Nemertes security benchmark research define data leakage as the loss of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI); about 30% identify the loss of intellectual property; and, the remainder point to the loss of general sensitive corporate data. Though loss of any data is significant, concern over PHI/PII is the primary DLP adoption driver. Why? Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have enacted breach notification legislation that mandates disclosure of loss of PII.
