The Rise of iSCSI

The borderless data center

Dissolution of borders is not just a phenomenon of the periphery, it’s happening in the core of the network, the data center. Nemertes sees a continued rise of iSCSI—transmission of SCSI storage blocks across an IP network as an alternative to fibre channel (FC). Looking at companies by size (in terms of annual revenues), small companies have a mean of 28% of systems using iSCSI now, and project 42% connectivity in two years. Midsize companies have 19% and project 25%, large companies less than 1% now and only 2% projected. This reflects mostly the fact that the larger the company the more likely it is to have a large investment in FC networks now and to want to extract all possible value from that investment.
