The Cloud Busy Signal

will we ever hear that sound?

Remember this sound? Busy Signal

I actually can’t remember the last time I dialed a number and received a busy signal. Answering machines, call waiting, call forwarding, call routing, etc. have pretty much made the busy signal obsolete. I do remember that when we did get a busy signal, we would just keep trying until the call went through and finally talk to the party on the other end. Now, failing all those other aforementioned advances in technology, we just send an e-mail, a text, an IM, or a tweet and get instant communication without a busy signal–good luck trying to hide.

Why do I reminisce? Over and over and over, I hear about cloud computing being compared to common utilities such as power and telecommunications. Sure, there are some similarities, but I guarantee that IT isn’t about to tolerate a busy signal on their cloud infrastructure.
