It’s not something you want to do everyday, maybe not in a blue moon – migrating applications and operations from a mainframe to open systems, that is.
But, it’s just what Sung Cho of Meritz Financial Services undertook when his mainframe performance stalled under the use of as few as 50 concurrent users. Cho got to work migrating his applications from an aging mainframe to several HP Superdome systems.

Cho, like many mainframe users involved in migration, faced several issues. He wanted a system that could scale as his environment grew. He needed performance – putting mission-critical applications at risk and jeopardizing QoS was definitely something he didn’t want.
In addition, many customers migrate because skill sets are hard to find. IT personnel with ZDM Virtualization, CICS and operation management skills are getting harder to find. Also, many customers see migration as a way to future-proof their infrastructures. With so much money tied up in mainframe upgrades and maintenance, it just makes sense to take the route that Cho did. Tune in next week to hear about his journey.
