The ENERGY STAR for servers draft is in the final stages and storage devices are next.
Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency sent server manufacturers and other stakeholders a letter soliciting their input on the ENERGY STAR Version 1.0 Computer Server specification before its ratification sometime in May.
The EPA didn’t waste any time turning its attention to enterprise storage. Last week it also sent a letter to enterprise storage equipment manufacturers advising them that the EPA will be developing an ENERGY STAR rating for storage devices.
Pursuing ENERGY STAR rating is a good idea. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), the Storage Performance Council and the Green Grid, among others are working with the EPA on both server and storage. There’s also a Green Storage Technical Working Group within SNIA that is focused on developing Green Storage Metrics and measurements. Companies participating in the Green Storage TWG are Sun, IBM, 3PAR, QLogic, Seagate, LSI, NetApp, Pillar Data, EMC, HP, Brocade and Copan, among others.
