Cisco is part of a group of major vendors looking to define standards for cloud computing management. Others include Citrix, HP, IBM, Microsoft and VMware, who together form the board of the Distributed Management Task Force’s Open Cloud Standards Incubator.
The group is aiming to develop specifications for cloud resource management, according to a report by colleague Denise Dubie. The group plans to focus on facilitating operations between private clouds within enterprises and other private, public or hybrid clouds by improving interoperability between them.
The group hopes that its specifications enable cloud service portability and management consistency across cloud and enterprise platforms. It plans to develop cloud resource management protocols, packaging formats and security mechanisms that facilitate interoperability, according to Dubie’s report.
This is the latest of several efforts that have popped up recently to ensure the success of cloud computing. Others include the Cloud Security Alliance and Jericho Forum, which both launched cloud security campaigns at last week’s RSA conference.
Here’s hoping these separate efforts don’t all happen in a vacuum…
