Cisco this week rolled out the Unified Service Delivery platform, a package of existing and enhanced products for service providers building cloud computing infrastructures. New products include 10G and 40G modules for the CRS-1 core router, which, along with the Nexus 7000 switch and new Unified Computing System blade sever, etc., data center platform make up Unified Service Delivery.
The new modules for the CRS-1 will link the system to the Nexus 7000 switch and extend virtualization out from the service provider’s data center through the IP network to other data centers and to peered service providers. Cisco says this will help service providers turn up new services quicker and make more efficient use of computing resources.
Juniper unveiled its own service provider virtualization initiative early this year.
But other than the new modules, Unified Service Delivery is a packaging play designed to create demand in the service provider market for the Nexus switch and the UCS computing system, analysts and other observers say. Cisco also missed an opportunity to detail its strategy for securing the cloud computing infrastructure, an issue which Cisco itself says is a ‘nightmare.’
Perhaps the company is setting the stage for a big strategy or framework announcement around cloud computing security…
