* Sun lets customers remove and destroy data in an auditable manner
Sun last week rolled out new services meant to help customers protect their data from loss and meet compliance objectives. Sun’s Data Protection Services, Data Erasure, is an onsite service that lets customers remove and destroy data in an auditable manner.
The service erases data at the disk platter and meets the Department of Defense 5220-22M data erasure policy, which calls for overwriting data three times directly to the hard disk platter surface, including remapped sectors. It also matches 14 different data erasure standards.
Data is exposed to loss during equipment changes, scheduled maintenance or decommissioning. Each event can make data subject to possible breach or compromise. Because of this and by using Sun’s Data Protection Services, Data Erasure, customers can maintain point-to-point control over their storage equipment by performing data erasures onsite.
The service, which is delivered by Sun-badged engineers, is software enabled and lets customers proactively plan for the destruction of data during equipment redeployment.
Upon destruction of data, Sun provides the customer with a certificate of destruction.
A number of other vendors, including EMC and Iron Mountain, also offer data erasure services.
