IBM, Symantec and EMC this week announced software and hardware for managing and protecting data on the network. IBM rolled out a new storage array – the DS3000 – for small and midsize businesses. Symantec introduced new versions of its Backup Exec data protection software, and e-mail and file system archiving software.
The IBM System Storage DS3000 series now includes two new systems – the DS3200 and DS3400 – which can be bundled in different configurations of controllers, cables and host bus adapters. The DS3000 series products are available starting at $4,200. IBM also introduced new services – IBM Implementation Services for Enterprise Content Management, Storage Optimization and Integration Services and IBM Migration Services for Data. Implementation Services for Enterprise Content Management allows customers to deploy effectively IBM Content Manager and CommonStore for Mail and Records Manager. The Storage Optimization and Integration Services help customers design easier to manage storage environments. IBM Migration Services for Data helps users migrate data to IBM storage systems.
Symantec enhanced its Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0 with support for Microsoft Vista, x64-bit platforms, VMware ESX Server and Microsoft Virtual Server. The disk-based package also improves performance over previous versions. Backup Exec System Recovery works with Windows server. It captures a copy of the system, including operating system applications, settings and data, and can be used to recover servers in the event of failure. Estimated pricing for Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0 is $1,095 per server and $69 per workstation.
Finally, EMC rolled out new versions of its EMC EmailXtender 4.8 and it EMC DiskXtender 6.2 software. EmailExtender software gives customers a new, flexible approach to e-mail archiving. EMC DiskXtender 6.2 for Windows file system archiving software lets customers search single or multiple file systems.
EmailExtender has new archive monitoring capabilities that let admins track messages throughout their lifecycle. They can see what policies caused e-mails to be collected or excluded from the archiving results. EmailXtender now also supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Office Outlook 2007.
The new version of DiskXtender for Windows software expands on its archiving activities. A new search module lets managers locate active and archived files for legal discovery or audit.
