Stratus beefs up its fault-tolerant range of servers

* Stratus introduces three Xeon-based fault-tolerant servers

Stratus Technologies last week launched three fault-tolerant servers that use its proprietary VOS operating system.

The VOS- (Virtual Operating System-) based servers complement the company’s Windows and Linux-based ftServer V Series servers. VOS is designed for high security, transaction processing environments. It also runs on Stratus’ Continuum line of high-end RISC-based servers.

The new ftServer V Series 250, 300 and 500 servers are based on Intel Xeon processors and surpass the processing performance of its predecessors the 100, 200 and 400 by as much as 60%, Stratus claims. They also double the disk I/O performance of the predecessor systems. Like all Stratus servers, the new V Series servers deliver five-nines of uptime.

The V Series servers were first introduced in 2004.

They feature 2.8 GHz Xeon dual-core processors in high-end two-way models. The new V Series line will also support new Stratus storage options with redundant logic, cooling and hot-swappable power supplies consistent with fault-tolerant data processing.

The V 250 consists of a one-way Xeon processor with as much as 1MB of L2 cache memory and 2GB, 4GB or 6GB of main memory. The V 300 is a two-way system that uses two 3.2 GHz Xeon processors and supports as much as 16GB of main memory. The V 500 is a two-way dual core system that features as much as 2MB of LL2 memory per core.

Each server features six PCI-Express slots, 72 146GB disk drives and two port embedded 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapters. They also feature Fibre Channel adapters for connection to external storage and hot swappable CPU, I/O modules and disks.
