* IBM makes the most money at the server game, according to Gartner
The latest server market numbers are out from Gartner and they all bode well for IBM.
Gartner says that in the second quarter of this year, IBM had 30% of total server revenue – it accounted for $3.7 billion, up 4.6% from the same period a year ago.
However, HP bested IBM in total shipments. It had $3.5 billion in sales of 494,000 servers, representing a 6.6% increase over the same period a year ago. The server market share for HP was 27.7%. Total shipments for the market was 1.78 million servers.
Dell shipped the second-most servers with 423,000. IBM shipped 277,200, while Sun shipped 95,000.
Sun shipped the most RISC/Itanium Unix-based servers, at 74,400 servers. HP sold the most x86 servers with 474,000 machines.
IDC reported that server blades topped $1 billion in 2004; the research firm predicts that that number could double this year. Right now, one in every 10 to 12 servers is a blade server. IDC claims that by 2007 every third or fourth server will be a blade server.
IBM also leads in blade server deployments. According to Gartner, the company has a 42% market share. Plus, the company is the leader in Linux-based server revenue.
