VoIP, storage/storage-area networking and Gigabit Ethernet remain the top-3 highest paying, non-certified network-related skills, according to Foote Partners’ most recent skills pay survey.
The results for its “Quarterly Hot Technical Skills and Certifications Pay Index” for the period ending Oct. 1, mirrored the results of Foote Partners’ survey for the first three months of the year when those three networking skills came behind project-level security and RAD/extreme programming as the industry’s highest-paying non-certified skills.
The skills pay reported in the survey is typically paid in the form of cash bonuses, or added to base salary in recognition of a vendor or technical skill that’s critical to the job, the research company says.
The overall median average pay for the 94 non-certified skills surveyed grew 9.9% for the period ended Oct. 1, to an average of 7% of base pay. The non-certified networking and internetworking skills category was the fourth-highest growing category for the past 12 months, increasing by 7.8% in value, according to the research. The highest growth was the applications development tools and languages category, which saw a 17.6% growth in premium skills pay value.
The researchers attributed the growth to “pent-up” demand for such skills as CIOs turn their attention from regulatory compliance to focusing on innovation and creating new products and services.
After VoIP, storage/SAN and Gigabit Ethernet, the next highest paying non-certified networking-based skill is RFID. The survey found that Novell expertise is the second-highest non-certified skill that has been losing value over the past 12 months, following XML.
Premium pay for the 95 certified skills surveyed didn’t do as well as non-certified skills pay as the overall median average pay grew 7.9% for the year. The networking category saw just a 3.7% increase in skills pay, compared to 13.2% for applications development and programming languages skills.
The most “hot” certified networking-related skills are Certified Information Systems Auditor and CompTIA Network Technician skills. The top 3 Cisco certified skills that have been growing in value is the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP), and Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) designations.
The top 3 certifications that have been losing their value in the last 12 months are Citrix Certified Administrator, Cisco Certified Network Professional and Certified Security Professional.
Still, in the next 12 months, Foote Partners cites networking infrastructure, wireless and security skills as the knowledge that will be in most demand over the next 12 months.
