Everyone is on the bandwagon for virtualization, even Microsoft. Well, it’s, um, virtually there – the company just put out the first release candidate of Virtual Server 2005, which is a hop, skip and jump away from an actual product. Virtual Server is designed to allow multiple operating systems to run on a single server, as long as one of them is Windows Server 2003. Vendors, users launch Linux InfiniBand effort

A group of high performance computing users and technology vendors led by Sun, Dell and Intel will launch on Tuesday an effort to make the InfiniBand input/output architecture easier to use with Linux, according to companies involved in the initiative.

AMD readies dual-core Opteron

AMD Monday reiterated plans to ship dual-core Opteron processors for servers and workstations next year, saying it had finalized design of the chips that would show up in systems by mid-2005.

Testing volunteers needed

Network World is looking for enterprise networks to be a part of a test to be conducted on security appliances with firewall, IPS, VPN and policy-based management features. Requirements: a T-1 Internet connection, 10 to 200 users sitting behind a security device and a willingness to let a security consultant assist in appliance management.
