The “father” of the Internet is pretty well known in tech circles, as are the father of Java and the father of Linux. In honor of Father’s Day, Network World this week salutes the many inventors who earned the parenthood moniker through their innovation and vision. Cisco’s Chambers would welcome Nortel partnership

Cisco CEO John Chambers sent the markets into a tizzy yesterday with an offhand comment about how he would love to partner with Nortel – and the markets started thinking about acquisitions. Chambers tried to play down such a possibility, but then poured gasoline on the fire with “Never say never.”

Cisco plucks Procket assets for $89 million

As expected, Cisco this week announced a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property, a majority of the engineering team and select assets from privately held Procket Networks, a maker of routers and routing technology, for $89 million in cash.

Sun offers glimpse of Niagara

Engineers from Sun will reveal the first technical details on the company’s eight-core microprocessor, codenamed Niagara, at the Hot Chips symposium on high-performance processors being held this August at Stanford University in Palo Alto, according to an abstract of their discussion submitted to the Hot Chips show organizers.
