LinuxWorld last week proved to be more than a gathering of supporters and a celebration of advances the open source operating system has made. The conference also set the stage for a contest that would unseat Tux the Linux penguin as the most-loved open source mascot.
GroundWork Open Source, a maker of network and system management products based in part on the Nagios open source management application, kicked off its inaugural “Who’s the next Open Source Idol?” contest at the show. Results announced today show that the Mozilla Firefox was the preferred mascot for nearly 50% of the 1,100 fans polled during the conference.
Beastie, the BSD Demon, placed second among those surveyed with nearly 32% of the vote, and Tux came in a distant third with just 6.6% of the vote ahead of The GNU Gnu, which garnered a paltry 2.3% from supporters.
