Don’t look now, but Microsoft Internet Information Server, or IIS, currently in general release as IIS6, or in IIS7 beta form, is gaining on the Apache web server.
Is this an expected development?
Of course.
While Apache is still a capable web server, Microsoft has continually improved IIS and added more functionality to it over the years. Coupled with the fact that IIS is currently as stable, reliable, and robust as Apache, there was no doubt that it would continue to win converts and gain market share.
It is that same functionality and reliability that has propelled IIS, closing the gap between both web servers from 51% just a couple of years ago to just over 14%, for a loss of 36.8% or thereabout.
If you look at the Microsoft Server roadmap, you will see that continued IIS development is in the cards, and would benefit you and your constituents (hey, it is the election season) going forward.
