Big Brother, Big Easy

New Orleans, home of flying beads and many a “Girls Gone Wild” tape, is now sporting bullet-proof security cameras citywide.

Officials say each camera can monitor eight city blocks, communicate with police and provide high-resolution footage for trial.

Yet USA Today writes: “Don’t call it Big Brother, however. City officials insist it’s much more like the old days when cops walked a beat than like government spying.”

Yeah, that sounds just like cops walking the beat. Except the officers have been replaced by cameras, which police watch somewhere else.

And, remember, shooting them down won’t help. The paper reports some industrious soul already took at AK47 to one and “All it did was get him arrested.”
